We don’t yet have a set date for the 2025 Canadian elections, however opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, is making a clear path for Canada’s mining industry, noting this week that were he to become the next prime minister, he would give federal approval for development of Ontario’s Ring of Fire development within months.
Speaking to reporters in Sudbury, Ontario this week, Poiliever noted, “My government will set a deadline of six months to greenlight permits for the Ring of Fire. We will unleash the production of chromite, cobalt, copper, nickel, platinum, and others. We will also commit C$1B over three years to help the Ontario government build the highway to get there.”
Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, has also pledged close to C$1B to help build this road along with other infrastructure needed in the region.
The Ring of Fire, over 500km northeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario, is already home to several projects, but the area requires significant infrastructure build to make it accessible. It is also currently undergoing environmental assessments.
The Ring of Fire is significant for Canada’s critical minerals supply, and its development aligns with Canada’s growing efforts to enhance domestic resource production, reduce reliance on foreign imports, and support the overall transition to a net-zero economy.
