Gains Admission Into Global Battery Alliance
Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT) has been admitted to the Global Battery Alliance (GBA), which aims to accelerate the deployment of batteries worldwide.
The GBA aims to reduce emissions and lower barriers to a circular battery economy – including the recycling of end-of-life batteries.
The Alliance brings together leading entities involved in the battery value chain, including manufacturers, governments, international organisations, NGOs and academics, all of them committed to actively reshaping the battery value chain and empowering sustainable development.
Lithium Australia Managing Director, Adrian Griffin, said membership of the GBA will assist the company in achieving its own ESG objectives, which are designed to ensure an ethical and sustainable supply of energy metals to the battery industry.
“Admission to the GBA as a start-up member, allows the company to participate in GBA meetings and engage in specific GBA workstreams, which will directly benefit the company’s advancement towards its stated aim,” Mr Griffin said.
“That is, the vertical integration of lithium extraction, production of battery materials and the recycling of end-of-life batteries; in particular, spent lithium-ion batteries.
“The company’s admission to the GBA is testament to the ESG values upon which it has built its business model. Both the company and the GBA have a core objective: that of creating an ethical, sustainable and circular battery economy.
“Envirostream Australia Pty Ltd, a 90% company owned subsidiary, is Australia’s only mixed-battery recycler. It will benefit directly from the company’s membership of the GBA through harmonisation of transboundary regulations and access to experts and major industry participants in battery recycling globally.
“Acceleration of the use of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage creates a global challenge in terms of both the supply of battery materials and recycling of the batteries when spent. VSPC Ltd, a 100% company owned subsidiary, is a producer of advanced cathode powders for lithium-ion batteries.
“As such, it too will benefit from the efforts of the GBA and its members in this area.” About the GBA Founded in 2017 at the World Economic Forum, the GBA is a platform for public/private collaboration that embraces 70 organisations dedicated to ensuring sustainability in the battery value chain.”
Mr Griffin said GBA’s vision of “[Establishing] a circular and responsible battery value chain is one of the major drivers to realize the 2° C Paris Agreement goal in the transport and power sectors, setting course towards achieving the 1.5° C goal if complemented with other technologies and collaborative efforts.
“By 2030, batteries could enable 30% of the required reductions in carbon emissions in the transport and power sectors [and] provide 600 million people with access to electricity, as well as create 10 million safe and sustainable jobs around the world. To realise this potential, the battery value chain will have to expand by 19 times over the next decade.
“Action is needed in the supply chain to establish sustainable market conditions and accelerate battery deployment in support of this vision.”
