Constellation Resources Limited (ASX: CR1) has announced that the Western Australian parliament has passed the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Bill 2023. This significant legislative advancement establishes a framework for the exploration and integration of naturally occurring hydrogen into existing gas pipelines in Western Australia.
In addition, Constellation has been conditionally accepted as the preferred applicant for six Special Prospecting Authorities with an Acreage Option (SPA-AO) applications over the Edmund-Collier and Yerrida Basin areas, covering a cumulative area of 56,192km2. These regions are considered by Constellation to be highly prospective for hydrogen, helium, and associated gases, positioning the company at the forefront of natural hydrogen exploration in Western Australia.
Constellation’s SPA-AO applications, previously announced, are now viewed as promising for the exploration of hydrogen, helium, and related gases. The global demand for hydrogen is projected to grow fivefold by 2050. Currently, most hydrogen consumption is derived from grey hydrogen produced by natural gas, but there is increasing momentum worldwide to identify and utilize zero-carbon sources of hydrogen.
Natural hydrogen, which is colourless, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, produces only water vapor as a by-product, making it a zero-carbon fuel. It can be sourced underground and potentially offers significantly lower production costs and carbon emissions compared to other hydrogen production methods.
The world’s only known natural hydrogen-producing field is Bourakebougou in Mali, Africa, which has been generating carbon-free electricity since 2012. Constellation believes its Edmund Collier Project has the potential to be a larger-scale analogue of Bourakebougou.
The Yerrida Basin Project applications are strategically located near reported gas outbursts from underground mining operations in Archean rocks and encompass major, deep-seated lithospheric structures and Archean stratigraphy. Both the Edmund Collier and Yerrida Basin projects are in close proximity to the Dampier to Perth and Goldfields gas pipelines, providing a potential market solution if discoveries are made.
