The Assay TV is delighted to be joined by James Lorimer, DA Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources – South Africa (SA), Parliament of the Republic of South Africa at 121 Mining Investment Cape Town. The DA Shadow Minister paints us a picture of the ever-evolving landscape of the South African mining sector, he highlights four critical areas threatening the implementation and progress of new and pre-existing projects: regulations, illegal mines and mine crime, struggling infrastructure, and community resistance.
The DA Shadow Minister explains that the SA Government intends to address these issues by developing a national Mining Development Agency, which will decide on projects and allocate contracts, by implementing an impartial external agency, funds and the community will naturally be greater protected.
The DA Shadow Minister also states that amendments to government legislation is vital to improving the SA mining industry – reducing government involvement and applying government decision making to issues such as worker safety and environmental safety only, will streamline the permitting processes and reduce corruption.
