In the lead-up to the 121 Mining Investment Online APAC event, we gathered some of Australia’s top resources investors to discuss the current outlook for mining and investment; top trends; metals outlooks, the role of ESG in investment, and more. The panel begins with a look at the current geopolitical situation, specifically the Russia-Ukraine conflict and how this is impacting the metals and mining and investment industries.
As part of this, we’ve recently seen the prices of some metals like nickel and lithium surging to record highs. The panel explores what these mean for the industry and how they might impact the energy transition.
The global energy transition has really dominated the metals space over the past year and we’ve seen endless reports about the amount of investment necessary to fund the exploration and production of these key energy transition metals. While the panel acknowledges that the funds have been focused on producing companies, we also explore where the funds might be able to take part in the exploration phase.
The panel looks at the surge in demand for thermal coal that we’ve seen and how we see both private equity and the public markets responding.
Moving on from the Energy Transition theme, we look at gold. Gold fell out a bit over 2021, but seems to be having a rebound now. We talk about investor interest in the market and future outlook.
Other key themes discussed include the constraints in the service sector and jurisdictional risk in investing, and finally, the role of ESG in investment.
